Fun Birthday Facts and Trivia
  • Today (and every day), there are at least 15 million people who are celebrating their birthday.

  • More people have their birthdays in August than any other month (about 9%), followed by July and September.

  • The month with the least birthdays is February.

  • More people are born on Tuesday than any other day.

  • The day of the week with the least birthdays is Sunday.

  • Almost 2 billion dollars is spent in the United States every year on birthday cards.

  • The average person receives 7 birthday cards (according to Greeting Card industry statistics)

  • "Happy Birthday To You" is the most popular song in the English language (followed by Auld Lang Syne and For He's a Jolly Good Fellow).

  • Mildred and Patty Hill wrote the tune to that birthday song in 1893 and it was originally called "Good Morning to All".

  • Because it is copyrighted, the happy birthday song makes around 2 million dollars a year from licensing fees. That's why you very rarely hear it sung on TV, because it costs them if they sing it!

  • There's something called "the birthday paradox" which claims that if there's at least 23 people in a room that there's a 50/50 chance at least two people will share the same birthday. But if you increase the people in the room to 60 or more (that's crowded!), then there's a 99% chance that two people or more will have the same birthday.

  • A long time ago, it was only kings that had birthday parties because no one else was considered important enough to have a celebration.

  • The Germans actually started birthday celebrations for children when they began something called "kinderfest", which means child festival. Over time this changed into modern birthday parties which are for everyone.

  • The Germans also created the birthday cake about 200 years ago. The first of these cakes were sweetened bread dough topped with sugar.

  • The biggest birthday cake in the world was created in 1989 for the 100th birthday of Fort Payne Alabama. This record breaking cake was in the shape of Alabama and weighed 128,238 pounds 8 ounces with over 16,000 pounds of icing.

  • The world's most expensive birthday party cost over 27 million dollars (US). It was on July 13, 1996 for the Sulton of Brunei's 50th birthday.

  • If you know someone who will be celebrating their 80th birthday (or beyond), you can request a birthday card from the President from the White House Greetings Office. They must be turning at least 80 years old and be a U.S. citizen. You should make your request at least 6 weeks before that person's birthday. You can fill out a form online, fax your request, or mail your request to them directly. For more information and online application, go to the White House Greeting Office website. You can fax them at 202-395-1232 or mail your request directly to:

    The White House
    Attn: Greetings Office
    Washington, D.C. 20502-0039

If you are faxing or sending a request by regular mail, be sure to include the following information:
    • Name of honoree
    • Address of honoree
    • Form of address (Mr., Mrs., Ms., Miss)
    • Date (month, day, year) of birthday
    • Requestor's name and daytime phone number
